Our History

Our History

Roots in Edmund Rice’s vision (1762-1844) Our story begins with Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, an Irish educator and social-justice reformer who founded the Christian Brothers and Presentation Brothers. His life of presence, compassion and liberation inspires the Centre’s commitment to stand with people pushed to the margins.

Founding the Edmund Rice Centre (1996) The Edmund Rice Centre for Justice & Community Education opened its doors in 1996—the UN’s International Year for the Eradication of Poverty—on Wangal/Gadigal Country (Balmain, Sydney). From day one we set out to challenge dominant narratives, ask hard questions and place the needs of the poor before the wants of the rich.

Expanding partnerships and impact Since 1996 we have built enduring partnerships with communities and human-rights advocates across the Pacific, Middle East, Africa, South Asia and the Americas, combining research, community education, advocacy and on-the-ground collaboration.

Past focus areas today Guided by Catholic Social Teaching and international human-rights frameworks, our programs concentrate on:

· Pacific communities living the frontline reality of climate change

· Refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia and beyond

· First Nations peoples and reconciliation in Australia

These priorities reflect our founding principles while responding to the evolving challenges of justice in our region.
